About light therapy

What is photobiomodulation?

Photobiomodulation, or PBM, is what happens when specific wavelengths of light are absorbed by your cells and change how they behave. Red light is absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase, an enzyme in your mitochondria, which supports cellular energy production. It has been studied in dentistry for decades, mostly as an adjunct alongside conventional treatment. We explain the mechanism in full on our technology page.

What wavelengths does Heliored use?

625nm red light sits in the absorption range of cytochrome c oxidase and is well matched to gum tissue. 470nm blue light works by a different mechanism entirely: it is absorbed by porphyrins produced by certain oral bacteria, and it is also the wavelength that activates the PAP formula in Helioblue.

Why is there no near-infrared?

Because of where the light sits. Near-infrared's main advantage is penetration depth, which matters when a light source is outside your mouth and has to send light through your cheek. An intraoral mouthpiece sits millimetres from the gum tissue with nothing in between, so that problem is already solved by the form factor. Adding a third emitter type would also split available power across more LEDs.

Does red light therapy actually work for gums?

Research suggests it may support gum tissue health, and the mechanism is well described. It is a supporting tool rather than a treatment, and every study showing benefit studies light alongside normal oral hygiene, not instead of it. Will it regrow receding gums?

No. Gum recession is structural tissue loss and no home device reverses it. Light therapy may help with the inflammation that often accompanies and contributes to recession, but that is a different claim. If your gums are receding, see a dentist or periodontist. The honest answer in full.

Will it treat gum disease?

No. Periodontitis needs professional assessment and treatment. Photobiomodulation has been studied as an adjunct to conventional periodontal care, which means alongside it. If you have pockets over 4mm you need a dentist, and no home device changes that. How to tell gingivitis from periodontitis.

Using the device

How long is a session?

15 minutes. The device has a built-in timer that switches the LEDs off automatically when the session ends.

How often should I use it?

At least three times a week. If you are also whitening, use it daily for two weeks alongside Helioblue, then drop back to weekly maintenance.

How long before I notice anything?

Clinical studies in this area typically run four weeks minimum and often twelve. Judge it over months rather than days, and track something concrete such as whether bleeding when you floss changes over time. Results vary considerably depending on where you are starting from.

Will it fit me?

The mouthpiece is flexible rather than rigid, so it accommodates a wide range of mouth sizes. If you are unsure, email us and we will send more photos and video before you order.

How do I clean it?

Use a soft brush on the mouthpiece end only, and do not submerge the device in water. Place it in the case and charge it to activate the UV sterilisation. The UV cycle supports hygiene but does not replace physical cleaning.

Can I use it with braces, implants or crowns?

Check with your dentist or orthodontist first. Light itself does not damage restorations, but fit and comfort vary a great deal with orthodontic appliances, and your clinician knows your specific situation.

Is it safe?

The device uses low-level LED light at wavelengths studied in dental research, and sessions are limited by a built-in timer. That said, if you are pregnant, taking photosensitising medication, have a light-sensitive condition, or are under the care of a dentist or doctor for an oral health issue, check with them before starting.

Helioblue whitening

Does it contain peroxide or fluoride?

Neither. It uses PAP (phthalimidoperoxycaproic acid), a peroxide-free oxidising agent, with hydroxyapatite to support enamel remineralisation.

Will it make my teeth sensitive?

Peroxide is the usual cause of whitening sensitivity, and there is none in Helioblue. PAP oxidises the same stain molecules without the free-radical activity that drives that sensitivity, and hydroxyapatite adds mineral back to the enamel surface as you whiten.

Can I use it without the device?

Yes, but you will get less from it. The formula is designed to be activated by 470nm blue light, and the mouthpiece also holds the gel against the tooth surface rather than letting saliva dilute it or spread it onto your gums.

How does it compare to peroxide whitening?

PAP is gentler and better suited to sensitive teeth. Professionally administered peroxide is still stronger on deep intrinsic staining, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. Full comparison here.

How long does one applicator last?

Roughly five to seven applications, depending on how much you use each time.

Should I whiten if I have crowns or veneers?

Speak to your dentist first. Whitening agents do not affect crowns, veneers or composite fillings, so whitening your natural teeth around them can leave you with a colour mismatch.

Do you ship free to the UK?

Yes, free UK delivery on every order, dispatched within two business days.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes. Orders shipped outside the UK may attract import duties, taxes or customs handling fees set by the destination country. These are not included in your order total, are charged by your local customs authority, and are payable by you. If duties are refused and the parcel is returned to us, you are refunded minus the cost of shipping.

What warranty do I get?

One year. If something goes wrong with your device, contact us and we will sort it out.
